Jails Action Coalition, Mr. Johnny Perez, Rev. Dr. Que English, Rev. Dr. Ray Rivera and NYC Interfaith Coalition Call on Mayor Bill DeBlasio to SAVE VISITING AT RIKERS. The coalition responded to proposed Rule Changes sponsored by the NYC Dept. of Correction that would severely limit the ability of loved ones to visit family members and friends incarcerated on Rikers Island as they await trail. Many advocates see this move as a smoke-screen to try to mask the impact recent changes to the way Correction Officers are now searched before entering the Island Jail Complex. As these protocols and oversights have staved the flow of contraband to the island the powerful Corrections Officer's Union, COBA, is looking to deflect blame for the deluge of illegal substances and goods flooding NYC jails. Severely limiting the rights of family members to visit their loved ones coterminously also allows Norman Seabrook the COBA chief to point a finger at these changes to account for a drop in contraband on the island. Advocates wonder: with so much work to do why the Board of Correction is even entertaining this option.
